Reinfelder school at Grunewald in Berlin

The Reinfelder school was build between 1974 and 1976 by the civil engineering department of Charlottenburg. It is situated in the Eichkamp settlement next to the Grunewald in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, it was first utilized in the year 1976.

At the moment the school, with it‘s about 400 pupils, has besides its universal elementary school service a focal point of support on “listening” for hearing impaired children. The namesake of the school is Dionys Reinfelder (1865-1939) who founded the first school for the hearing impaired.

The special visual features are the exposed aggregate concrete tiles as well as the yellow window paintwork, this combination was often used in the 70ties and 80ties for schools in Berlin and West Germany. The growing number of pupils demanded new, cost-efficient school buildings. The classic precast concrete slabs schools where often 2 to 3 sometimes 4 story buildings, with with generous window space.

Filming location for the original Netflix series “Dark”

The school is a filming location for the successful German Netflix series “Dark” by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, it takes place in the fictional small town Winden. Especially for the series to original 1986 yellow color scheme of the building was reconstructed, on for example the windows and rails. As well as many other building elements that were reconstructed to their original state for the filming.
